Spiky Buns & Bedheads: Styles for Spring 2023

Spring is right around the corner and you know what that means – it’s time to switch up your hairstyle! If you’re looking to change up your look this season, the runway shows in New York, London, Milan, and Paris have all the inspiration you need.

From Y2K styles to bedhead to new ways to tie your hair up, these are the hair trends that will dominate this season and beyond.

One trend we are absolutely loving right now is wet hair. It’s simple, versatile and makes an edgy statement all at the same time. Wet hair can look beachy or punky depending on the styling, making it the perfect spring accessory for any occasion.

If you’re looking for a softer take, opt for a sleek wet ponytail or messy braid to channel those sun-soaked beach days. Make sure to use a shine spray to finish off your look and accentuate that shimmery, wet hair vibe.

But if you’re feeling a bit more daring, consider trying an edgy mohawk or spiked hairstyle with wet hair. This can create an eye-catching style with an attitude that’s sure to turn heads. You can add texture by playing around with braiding, or adding colour to add a playful punch to your look.

If you’re feeling a little bit of déjà vu when it comes to hair, you’re not alone. This spring is seeing the resurgence of early 2000s looks, lovingly referred to as Y2K styles. While not every style has caught on since the early 2000s, this trend promises plenty of opportunity to have some fun with different hairstyles – from the exaggerated layers to full head of hair extensions.

While we certainly cringe when thinking of some of the more “out there” looks of the early 2000s, there are plenty of “in” looks that can be revived in new ways this spring.

Let’s start with one of the most iconic looks of the era: the spiky bun. While a great statement hairstyle, you can use this idea as the base to take things in a softer direction. Keep your natural texture and let it come out of the braid a bit, or pull the hair out of the bun for a more relaxed feel.

For a really updated look, try adding a splash of colour with clip-in extensions. While we all remember extensions from the early 2000s, there are now tons of different colour options available. Pick one (or more) to liven up a ponytail or add a highlight to an updo.

Finally, let’s look to the micro braid for an elevated 2020 twist. Micro braids used to be associated with very tightly-wound plaits, but this time around, use them as a way to add texture and intricate patterns to an updo. Make them soft and romantic, or bold and intricate – it’s all up to you!

We can also thank the influence of social media, particularly TikTok, for the bedhead look, a looser and more undone version of hair. Think air-dried waves and flyaways that feel effortless and look stunning. After all, you don’t have to go to the salon to look great – the messier, the better.

But if your look of choice is something more polished and put-together, never fear – the new take on updos will certainly do the trick. Tying your hair up with hair clips is one way to make sure you keep the hair away from your face, or use headbands or statement clips for something with a little bit more edge.

We’re also looking at a break in the seemingly eternal reign of the middle part – giving way to a range of different parts, from a slight off-centre part to side parts or no parts at all. This can be achieved in any hairstyle from updos to loose styles and braid to pixie cuts.

No matter your hair type or length, this season offers something for everyone. Embrace the trends of the season and take advantage of this opportunity to try something new with your hair. Let your hair down – literally and figuratively – and enjoy a spring refresh.
